This
plant of Mexican origin, was introduced to Sardinia
during Spanish domination. This prickly pear plant
is particularly suited to even the most desperate
soil conditions and has therefore become a
characteristic feature of the Sardinian landscape.
The plant
has large flat branches covered in numerous robust
spines. Intense yellow flowers give way to oval
fruits with a thick prickly skin. The pulp of the
fruit is very sweet and full of seeds and it can be
used for making excellent jams. |
