The white
graped Torbato vine, which can only be found in the
Alghero area in just over 90 hectares of land, is
undoubtedly of Spanish origin as it was introduced
during Catalan domination. This gives rise to its
latin name Vitis iberica and its name in dialect is
catalan Grape, or Turbat. Torbato was also found in
the south of France with the name of Malvoisie de
Roussillon, but it has since disappeared from its
original area and France. It is perfectly suited to
the limestone-clay type of soil and the hot dry
climate in the Alghero area. The Torbato vine is
used alone to make a wine of the same name or an
excellent sparkling brut, both of which are
protected under the designated origin Alghero DOC. |
