The red
Cagnulari vine, which is found in a significant
percentage of vineyards in the Sassari area (13%),
is nearly completely absent from the other regions
of Sardinia. It is very
similar to the Bovale vine and therefore we can
presume that it has been brought to the Sassari area
from Spain, where it has acclimatised well and can
be distinguished from its original clone, which
could well have been the Bovale vine. It has
different names in different areas: In Gallura it is
called Caldarello or Caldareddu whereas in the
Sassari area it is called Cagnulari.
In
wine-making it is usually mixed with other grapes,
but since 1980 it has been produced in a pure form
in the Usini area. In 1995, Cagnulari was awarded
designation of origin under the name Alghero DOC. |
